High School Scholars Tackle Tough Issues at Leadership Retreat

17 high school juniors and seniors presented data on funding sources, courses/clubs and teacher-student ratios found in private and public schools throughout our city, as well as contributing factors such as access to transportation, affordable housing and health services in our neighborhoods.

Giving dollars to a "think tank" charged with finding solutions to these problems and the psychological impact it has on students seemed like a most worthy investment. Leadership Retreat 5 students were then "awarded" $1M in grant monies, based on their excellent analysis of issues around educational equity in Seattle.

Just one of three Leadership Retreats happening over the long weekend, this group dug deep and shared personal stories, concerns, and their belief that when it comes to race relations and equity, while we've come a long way, there is still a very long way to go. But they are committed to being part of the solution - giving us all hope for the future.
