Scholars Give Back as Advisors One of the goals of Rainier Scholars is to have students learn the value of giving back to communities who support them. Eleven Scholars from Cohorts I, II and III found just such an opportunity this past summer as Student Advisors. Bob Hurlbut, who supervises the advisors, believes having Rainier Scholars students serve as advisors is a perfect match. “The student advisors who have completed the AEP are light years ahead in the intangibles of the program. They know first hand about the struggles, hard work, high expectations and even the mistakes you make during the 14-month academic phase.” At the same time, it can be a reality check as things don’t always work out as planned. He reminds the advisors, “you cannot will your students to greatness or like them to greatness.” Understanding there are limitations on what that they can do is a tough, but important lesson to learn. Such disappointments are easily outweighed, however, by the great sense of accomplishment they feel when they are able to connect with a student and help them through a difficult time. Amidst their busy schedules, we got a chance to get a few thoughts about their work from three of the Student Advisors. "We see ourselves in the students. Being a Rainier Scholar creates a connection that no other person can have. We can feel ourselves actually doing the work the kids are doing - it’s an amazing bond."
"One of my students this summer has perfectionist tendencies. During recent exams he stayed up until 5 or 6 AM studying. Well, I did that too when I was his age. You know it’s not the best thing to do, but it happens and having been there, I can help him with other strategies to succeed and deal with this." "It’s challenging when the kids are down - when they are not doing as well as they thought they would be doing. And it’s tough for me to go back to what is was like emotionally as a 5th grader. But once I get there - onto their level - they really open up and we realize the problem is not that hard to solve."
