Expert Panel Shares Insights on Cultivating Diversity and Inclusion

EHH 2014 panel and scholars

"Thought-provoking"

"Great insights and wisdom"

"...makes me reflect on how I can have a greater impact."

These were just some of the remarks inspired by Rainier Scholars' Education Happy Hour, Pipeline to Progress that featured an expert panel taking on challenging questions about creating diverse and inclusive organizations. The candid and engaging discussion was facilitated by Rainier Scholars alumna and drew a range of business leaders and RS corporate partners to the office of Whitepages, Inc. our event host.

The panel of human resource thought-leaders included Donna DeBerry of Starbucks, Effenus Henderson of henderworks.com and formerly of Weyerhauser, Chanin Kelly-Rae of State of Washington and James Thomas of Nordstrom Seattle. They shared their personal and professional experiences about both their own career paths as people of color and their years of work as leaders of diversity and inclusion efforts in a range of organizations the public and private sector. Read the panelist's biographies.

Our panel shared successful strategies and best practices to effectively identify, recruit, develop and retain individuals far too often under-represented in both the classroom and the boardroom. See the attached summary of the panel's response to the questions posed by scholars.

The event reminds us that the work of Rainier Scholars extends beyond a college degree to support our graduates as they launch their careers. Our vision is that together we will continue to build more inclusive workplaces, vibrant communities and a stronger Seattle.

To help build a more diverse pipeline of talent for your organization, consider the Rainier Scholars internship program.  For questions on this opportunity or other ways to engage with Rainier Scholars, contact Bethany Furubayashi at 206-407-2181.
